Section 01

The city's best late walk is the one nobody plans — through narrow streets that go quiet before midnight.

Section 02Find Your Feet at Carrefour Vavin

Leave the boulevard du Montparnasse at Carrefour Vavin — that old crossroads where La Coupole, Le Dôme and La Rotonde once kept their terraces lit until the small hours — and point yourself north. The Latin Quarter is barely ten minutes' walk, but take the long way: along the rue de la Grande-Chaumière, where Modigliani once rented studio space, then up through the narrowing grid of streets that feel, at midnight, as though they belong to another century.

Section 03Through Sleeping Streets

Cross the boulevard Saint-Michel and the architecture shifts — here the Haussmann grid loosens into something older and more accidental. Rue de la Huchette, rue de la Harpe, rue Saint-Séverin: these streets are older than most of Paris, and they know it. By eleven o'clock the tourists have largely gone. The stone closes in, the sky narrows to a stripe above. A few bars are still open, warm rectangles of light in the dark façades; mostly it is quiet, and quiet suits these streets better than noise ever did.

Section 04Toward the River

Follow the current of the hill north and downward — everything here slopes gently toward the Seine, as it has since before the city had a name. Cross the Quai Saint-Michel and walk the embankment west. The cathedral sits on its island, floodlit and enormous. The river is black and slow. The booksellers' green boxes are locked and padlocked, but they are still there, leaning against the parapet like patient company, and the walk back to your side of town has never felt long enough.
